Soutzoukakia… Such a beloved dish. My mother is an expert on soutzoukakia. It’s like her signature dish! As I said in the previous post my grand-grandmother was from Smyrna so this is an authentic recipe of our family. Lots of garlic, cumin and cinnamon. These are the main ingredients, besides beef of course. If you like garlic and spices this dish will be one of your favorites!

The difference of soutzoukakia and classic meatballs, besides the spices, is that we fry them first. Afterwards we dip them in a very simple tomato sauce until they are fully cooked. Mouthwatering recipe..

You can serve soutzoukakia with mashed potatoes, French fries or Atzem Pilaf. I remember as a child I wasn’t fond of tomato sauce. I guess that goes for most children. So I was begging my mother to give me only fried soutzoukakia with French fries. I loved them like that! Now I appreciate the original recipe..

My mother’s classic recipe is a bit different than mine. She makes French fries but not fully cooked and then cooks them in the tomato sauce along with soutzoukakia. This is the authentic recipe. I prefer to serve my soutzoukakia with Atzem Pilaf. Just another alternative to keep in mind! What do you prefer as a side dish?Filia.
